NCG Validates its First BA (Hons) Degree using New Taught Degree Awarding Powers

In a landmark development for further education, NCG has validated its first BA Hons degree since being awarded Taught Degree Awarding Powers earlier this year. This is the first full degree award to be validated by a college group in the UK.

In June 2016, the Privy Council  awarded NCG Taught Degree Awarding Powers.  The group became the country’s first ever Further Education institution to be able to develop and award its own honours and master’s degrees.

NCG Direct, the online learning school for Newcastle College has developed a new BA (Hons) online degree in Leadership and Business Management, which was recently approved by NCG’s validation panel. The first cohort of online learning students are expected to start in January 2017.

NCG Chief Executive, Joe Docherty said:

“Gaining Taught Degree Awarding Powers was a landmark development for the sector. It’s a real breakthrough nationally and we are delighted  to have developed our first BA Hons degree just months after the award was granted.

“Degree awarding powers enable us to be more responsive to the demand for higher level skills as well as supporting the local economy and more people into jobs.”

Nicky Turnbull, Head of Higher Education for Newcastle College said:

“The new online degree programme provides employers and employees with the flexibility of a distance learning degree route but with lots of support from specialist on line tutors as well as the benefit of simultaneously completing the level 5 professional ILM qualification.”
