Following the launch of an Environmental Strategy last year, which set out a number of ambitious targets to reduce its carbon footprint, NCG has announced the appointment of a Sustainability in Curriculum Officer.

Liam Carr, previously a Curriculum Leader in Access to HE at Newcastle College, will work alongside NCG’s Energy and Sustainability Officer Matthew Ward, to achieve the commitments made in the Strategy.

The role will focus primarily on one of the key principles within the Environmental Strategy; to embed sustainability in curriculum and prepare learners across all of NCG’s seven colleges for the green future. An important part of Liam’s job will be to work with colleagues within curriculum to embed sustainability best practices within teaching, whilst working to promote culture of environmental sustainability.

Ahead of taking up the role, Liam commented: “I am delighted to be appointed to the role, working with colleagues in all of our colleges to make our curriculum more sustainable. I am looking forward to supporting and enabling colleagues to really embed environmental issues in their own practice. This role is an exciting one as it has the potential to have a transformative effect on our colleges, communities and our planet.”

Tony Lewin, Executive Principal and Executive Lead for Sustainability, added: “One of NCG’s most critical commitments in our Environmental Strategy is to embed a culture of sustainability within our organisation and the young people that we educate, in the hope that we can instil in them a sense of genuine civic activism and passion for solving one of the biggest challenges we face moving forward.

“It is an important step forward to appoint Liam as Sustainability in Curriculum Officer, to work in parallel to the great work that our Group Energy and Sustainability Officer has been doing since the launch of our strategy, and I look forward to seeing the positive changes that will happen across our colleges as a result.”
