External Examiners

Learn more about how we work with external examiners and access information used by examiners.

External Examiners are an essential part of the organisation’s framework for quality and standards. All approved courses leading to an NCG award require an external examiner.

For further details about the process of external examination, please see the QAA UK Quality Code.

The HE Academy have also produced a useful guide to external examining which may be useful for new and existing external examiners, please refer to the ‘HE Academy External Examiners Handbook’ link below for more information.

External mentors may be appointed to assist external examiners in certain cases, for instance, new and/or relatively inexperienced external examiners are normally mentored in the first year of their role.

The role of external examiners is to assure the quality of students’ learning experiences and ensure that they are assessed fairly in relation to other students on the same course and to all students across the organisation and nationally.

External examiner reports are an integral part of NCG’s quality assurance processes. They form part of the requirements for annual review and in all cases course teams must demonstrate how they have responded to the views and comments made by external examiners/mentors.

The links below provide useful documentation for external examiners/mentors and NCG staff involved in submitting proposals for their appointment.

NCG staff are advised to review the guidance documentation prior to seeking further assistance from HE Registry. All queries should be sent to externalexaminers@ncgrp.co.uk
