Carlisle College graduate Ava Dickinson has made waves in the world of film, scooping two major honours at this year’s Steel to Reel Awards in Bolton.
Hosted by the University of Greater Manchester, the Steel to Reel Awards shine a spotlight on rising stars in film and media production. Ava won the Best Editing and Best Overall Film categories. Her winning entry wowed the judges with its creativity, technical finesse and powerful storytelling earning her a place among the region’s most exciting young filmmakers.
Reflecting on the experience, Ava said:
“It was such an honour just to be nominated. I didn’t expect anything when I submitted my film, so to win not one but two awards was phenomenal. It’s really boosted my confidence and reminded me how much hard work went into it from everyone involved!
“The whole festival was amazing. Watching the other nominees’ films and seeing everyone’s work recognised was so inspiring. One of the most surreal moments was being handed the Best Overall Film award by Nick Dudman, the man behind the makeup in Harry Potter and Star Wars. As a creative, it was a full-circle moment I’ll never forget.”
Ava’s journey began at Carlisle College, where she studied Creative Media Production and Technology (Film Production). She credits the course – and her tutors – for helping her discover her passion and build the skills she needed to succeed. “I’ve always been drawn to digital creativity, so Carlisle College felt like the perfect fit. Those two years were honestly the highlight of my life. I learned so much about the media industry – and about myself.”
She praised the course’s hands-on approach and the freedom to explore her own ideas.
“We were encouraged to be creative and take risks, while still learning practical skills. Even the theory lessons were engaging – the tutors made sure of that! They really pushed me to step outside my comfort zone, and I’ll always be grateful for that.”
