Learners from across NCG have excelled in the regional heats of Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) Further Education Maths Challenge over the last month, with three colleges securing places in the upcoming national final.

The annual MEI Maths Challenge is designed to inspire FE students who are developing their maths skills and working towards a new or improved maths qualification. More than 92 colleges and 40,000 students take part each year, culminating in regional heats and a newly introduced national final.

Students from five NCG colleges (Kidderminster College, Newcastle College, Newcastle Sixth Form College, Southwark College and West Lancashire College) took part in this year’s competition, going head‑to‑head with teams from across their regions.

In the North East, Newcastle College secured first place, with Newcastle Sixth Form College following closely in second, earning both colleges a place in the national final.

Kidderminster College also claimed the top spot in the West Midlands heat, ensuring their team will compete at the national event later this month.

In the North West, West Lancashire College achieved a strong third‑place finish, narrowly missing out on a national place.

Southwark College also performed impressively in the London event, securing second place in one of their categories but falling just short of qualifying for the national final.

Tony Lewin, Executive Principal (Curriculum) at NCG said: “We are incredibly proud of the learners across NCG who took part in this year’s MEI Maths Challenge. Their success reflects not only their hard work and determination, but also the commitment of our teaching teams who inspire and support them every day. To see three of our colleges reach the national finals is a fantastic achievement, and a wonderful example of what our students can accomplish when they believe in their potential.”

Good luck to all of the winning teams from Kidderminster College, Newcastle College and Newcastle Sixth Form College, who will now compete in the national final on Tuesday 21 April at Solihull College & University Centre.
