Lewisham College partnered with leading UK construction company Forterra to host the annual Bricklaying Apprentice Challenge recently.
Held at the specialised Deptford Bridge campus, the event brought together 15 London-based apprentice bricklayers to display their skills in a selection of challenges that tested their practical skills, time management and ability to fulfil a brief.
What set this challenge apart was the requirement for participants to incorporate a specific feature into their walls, allowing them to demonstrate their precision and creativity using Forterra's donated iconic London Bricks.
First year Lewisham College apprentice Rocco Reynolds-Black, won first place. He said, "Initially, I felt quite nervous to participate, but once I got started with the challenge, I was fully engaged. I am proud to have secured first place and am excited about what will come next. Here is to many more successes in the future, with the Guild of Bricklayers next!"
Jamie Stevenson, Principal at Lewisham College, said: "We're proud to host the prestigious annual Forterra Bricklaying Apprentice Challenge in partnership with Forterra. This event provides a valuable opportunity for learners and apprentices to demonstrate their skills and engage with professionals in the construction industry, equipping them for their future careers after college.
"We congratulate the winners and commend everyone who participated for their hard work and dedication. Well done to all!"
