Carlisle College welcomed ITV Border to campus this week, shining a spotlight on its partnership with Cumbria Police through the Cars for Colleges initiative.
Filming took place in the College’s Motor Vehicle workshops, where crews captured students developing their skills in a real workshop environment. Learners, alongside teaching staff, curriculum leaders and representatives from Cumbria Police, shared their experiences as part of a feature for ITV News Lookaround.
Through the Cars for Colleges scheme, Cumbria Police donate seized vehicles, often recovered following offences such as driving without insurance or without a valid licence. These vehicles provide a valuable resource for training, allowing Motor Vehicle students to work on genuine automotive systems and build confidence in industry-standard scenarios.
The initiative continues to strengthen links between Carlisle College and local policing teams, while helping learners develop the practical skills needed for future careers in the automotive sector.
During the visit, ITV Border filmed students carrying out hands-on tasks and spoke with staff about how the partnership enhances the learning experience. The feature explored the impact of access to real vehicles and how it helps prepare students for employment.
The segment, broadcast on ITV News Lookaround, highlighted the College’s ongoing commitment to enriching learning, strengthening community links and supporting positive outcomes across the region.
Thanks to Carlisle College’s Motor Vehicle staff and students, Cumbria Police and the ITV Border crew for bringing this story to life. Partnerships like this demonstrate the power of collaboration in creating meaningful opportunities for learners.
