NCG colleagues came together earlier this week for a powerful and moving event celebrating the legacy, culture and contributions of the Windrush generation.
The online event, ‘Honouring the Windrush Generation – Stories, Legacy, Lived Experience’, formed part of NCG’s ongoing programme of equality, diversity, inclusion and belonging (EDIB) activities, following previous events marking LGBTQ+ History Month and International Women’s Day.
Chaired by Jane Button, Principal of Southwark College, the event featured a panel discussion led by Calista Francis, Director of Equal Women, alongside colleagues from Southwark College and Lewisham College who shared deeply personal reflections on their family histories and connections to the Windrush generation.
Panel members included:
- Andrew Nicholls, Music Lecturer, Southwark College
- Lloyd Miller, Security Officer, Lewisham College
- Michele Bent, English and Maths Lecturer, Lewisham College
During the discussion, colleagues reflected on the journeys of parents and grandparents who came to Britain as part of the Windrush generation, sharing stories of hope, resilience and determination. They spoke openly about the challenges their families faced, including experiences of racism and discrimination, while also celebrating the strength of community, culture and identity that has endured across generations.
The panel also explored their wider heritage, sharing personal photographs and stories from visits to the Caribbean and Africa as they sought to reconnect with their roots and deepen their understanding of their family histories.
One of the event’s most memorable moments came when Michele Bent shared her original poem, Bajans Abroad Gatherin', which captured themes of heritage, belonging and cultural pride.
The discussion provided colleagues with an opportunity to learn from lived experiences, honour the lasting impact of the Windrush generation and reflect on the stories that continue to shape communities across the UK today.
Thank you to Calista Francis and NCG colleagues who contributed personal experiences and reflections to create such a powerful discussion, reinforcing NCG's ongoing commitment to equality, inclusion and expanding opportunity for all.
